college指综合大学的学院，或是社区大学，高等专科学院
university是正统的综合大学，等级比college高
不过现在也有些速成大学和远程教育学院自称university的

college指规模较小，学科较少的高等院校，尤指与于特定职业有关的高等教育机构，像师范学校，技术学校等。也可指university中划分出来的各个学院，像文学院，机械学院，计算机学院等。该词在口语中常泛指提供高等教育的大学，强调大学教育。

university指规模大，学科多，同时还进行各项科研工作的综合性大学，通常有权授予毕业生各种学位。该词还可用于泛指提供高等教育的大学，此时可以与college互换使用。

我的理解是：
uni大概相当于国内的大学
col大概相当于国内的学院

MIT不是college，它的全稱是：Massachusetts Institute of Technology
IT學院基本上美國每一州都有
例如：
