CeBIT is in full swing and the handset announcements are starting to flow. Luxury handset brand Bellperre (yes, we just love brands spelled with all caps) is not meant to evoke some ringing piece of fruit but instead has announced some rather rectangular but fashion-clad handsets. And no, these aren't throwbacks to the 1970s transistor radio marketplace, but are meant for the ultra-uber stylish folk of 2007, kinda like Nokia's Vertu brand. Bellperre is marketing this new line as 100% devoid of plastic; instead, the company is using "authentic materials" like leather, steel, gold, hardwood, sapphire, and other materials. We guess plastic is just not that "authentic" any longer. Anyway, the new handsets were designed to complement other high-end personal items and were inspired by luxury and fashion goods, according to Bellperre. In addition, the "largest single piece of sapphire crystal ever found on a handset" is being used in these handsets. Make sure and park this beauty next to that Tag Heuer watch when you go to bed.

We don't really know the back story on China's "Omnipotence" brand, but seeing how it's apparently going after the luxury phone segment with a vaguely Vertu-esque logo and resides in a country with a particularly freewheeling attitude toward patent and trademark law, we're already a bit skeptical about the legitimacy of the licensing agreements (or lack thereof) that led to the phone's Disney and BMW (yes, BMW) branding. Nonetheless, there'll only be 130 of the 10 millimeter thick candybars produced, each bearing Disney-themed software goodies (never mind the company's misspelling of "Mickey") and a dubious "Design by BMW in Munich" inscription on the back -- so get yours while the gettin's good. Features include a 1.3 megapixel cam, Bluetooth 2.0, microSD expansion, touch sensitive nav buttons, and some sort of alleged certificate of authenticity from BMW. One point three frickin' megapixels, though? In a so-called luxury phone?

Man, we hope this is true. Switzerland's Zenum has been talking up its gorgeous "Opus Operis" concept Pocket PC for a while now -- but as is too often the case, the alleged release date came and went with no product in sight. Zenum's site has been reborn recently, though, suggesting that the company is still on track to eventually offer the QWERTY device, this time with a spring '07 launch. Though the site shows Windows Mobile 5 as the platform of choice, we trust Zenum will have the wisdom to switch over to 6 by the time the Opus gets out the door. Other specs should include 128MB ROM, 64MB RAM, 2 megapixel cam, 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 1.2, and a tri-band GSM radio (no 850MHz, apparently) atop a 200MHz OMAP750. We'd love to see a successful launch on this one, folks, but we'd gladly wait a few weeks if you could squeeze some quadband action in there. Oh, and Windows Mobile 6, while you're at it, eh?

If you're in Germany this week and have a chance to hit the CeBIT show, you may be able to peep the new BlueBird PIDION BM-500 Pocket PC (and when we say "Pocket PC," yes, we mean it's Windows Mobile 5-based). The bar handset features a rather nice 2.8 inch touch-screen, EV-DO Rev. 0 data speeds, built-in 802.11b WiFi, Bluetooth, the now-standard 1.3 megapixel cam and the less-often used miniSD card slot. Changes we'd make? Get microSD in there and dump the miniSD, upgrade that cam to 2 megapixels and get WM6 in there. Seriously -- WM5? Come on now, that is so January 2007.

The Walkman phone's sporty orange trim gets switched out for a classy attempt in gold on Sony Ericsson's newest rendition, the W660. At a svelte 0.57-inches, the UMTS 2100 and GPRS 900/1800/1900 phone really packs in the goods with Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, FM radio support, a 2 megapixel camera, web browsing, RSS feeds, and a 512 MB Memory Stick Micro (upgradeable). It has a 2-inch color TFT display and totes random extras like TrackID, a music identification service, and a Picture Blogging function that allows you to send snapshots directly to your personal blog. To top off the lifestyle angle on this phone, Sony Ericsson has embellished the pants offa this one, with the aforementioned gold trim on both glossy color options, Record Black and Rose Red. The Rose Red (geez, what's up with the cranberry hype?) model jazzes it up a bit more with its floral-themed relief pattern on the backside. For those of you who are more concerned with performance, you'll get up to 6 hours of talk time on GSM, up to 2.5 hours with 3G, or a max of 25 hours of music listening. Expect to peep these newbies in select markets by Q2 of this year.
