$70 for a T-shirt! What a rip-off!(一件T恤而已,70美元?!
I was ripped off by the taxi driver
[Oxford dictionary]
rip off: usually passive, (informal) to cheat sb, by making them pay too much, by selling them sth of poor quality, etc
rip-off: noun, informal, something that is not worth what you pay for it.
---------------------------------
2. ’the smile centre‘
I am a night owl.
I am an early bird'.
我得早点睡了 to have an early night
我得晚点睡了 to have a late night
e.g. I think on Sunday I shall just crash out and have an early night.
[Oxford dictionary]
night owl, informal, noun, (C), a person who enjoys staying up late at night
---------------------------------
4. ’Crystal Clear‘
'Make it crystal clear!'
The beauty of glass comes from its crystal-clear qualities.
I‘ve made it crystal clear.
crystal clear solution.
crystal clear sound.
Make your website purposes crystal clear.
---------------------------------
flying pig / pigs might fly
Things might improve if the other party gets elected," one person might say.
"And pigs might fly," comes the sarcastic rejoinder.
。。于是人群中有人在喊: "Look! there is a pig flying!" :D
as an example of something obviously nonsensical or of some event that is extremely unlikely to occur.
---------------------------------
The widespread use of sth. may indicate that ..
The widespread use of QQ may indicate that the number of chinese surfing the Internet is getting more.
Success : It is not the position you stand, but the direction in which you look
Imagination: May the seeds today and be the fruits tomorrow
The train now standing at plateform 1 is the Virgin Trains Services to Bath spa, calling at XXX,XXX,XXX....
Legs:
Type Dep. From Arr. At Length wait Operating company
16:30 Place1 17:15 Place2 1h 2m 0h 10m Virgin trains
17:15 Place2 18:35 Place3 1h 10m 0h 10m First great western
18:45 Place3 19:29 Place4 0h 44m 0h 10m South west trains
19:34 Place4 20:03 Place5 oh 29m - South west trains
Legs!
常cut class to do something.
Students cut class to protest war.
but normally I cut class to extend my sleeping hours ...
原句言简意赅,值得追忆一笔: "Feed Coins Slowly One At A Time",尤其喜欢Feed这个动词用在这里,“喂币”,嗯嗯,中文好象也有这个说法~
Sorry, there is a queue starting here"
相应的表达为“The line starts back there." or "Hey, no cutting in line."
(-Special thanks to golfmade who attributes to the US version answers)
英文该怎样表达呢?without pollution? protect the environment? environmentally-friendly“.
to look for healthy and environmentally-friendly recreation, such as cycling. ~ :D
environmental friendly technology
environmental friendly sources
environmentally friendly chips
......
brainchild, 名词,an idea or invention of one person or a small group of people (from oxford dictionary)。
"The term 'direct marketing' was first used in 1961. It was the brainchild of another American pioneer, Lester Wunderman. "l(Wunderman
Reference: Michael J. Baker, (2003), The Marketing Book, Butterworth Heinemann: pp565
Reference:
BBS avatar e.g.
Do you like my new BBS avatar?
I rip mp3.
I rip at almost the highest quality.
I just rip them all to my computer.
I do not want to waste my time. I value my time very much.
“Handle with care. Do not touch without gloves. Skin irritant. Avoid contact with eye area. Wash hands after preparation. Wash before use.”
Let the broadband be affordably piped into every home, making interaction with the Internet far richer.
有趣儿的是在英语中也有类似的表达,看书时正好看到了,叫做 throw the baby out with bathwater.
However it would be wrong to 'throw the baby out with bathwater' and reject utility analysis completely.
other example could be: Don't throw the baby out with bath water.
20. 'running nose'
The cold bug bit you。
It's better to do something sooner rather than later.
It's better to do the essay sooner rather than later.

2. Whether you live in Tampa, florida, or Los Angelos, california, we have wholesale rims available to ship to your doorstep everyday.

combo: n. The product or result of combining; a combination; a usually small jazz or dance band.

John's family was likely to be eaten out of house and home.
To eat crow means "to suffer humiliation", and specifically "to be forced to admit to having made an error, as by retracting an emphatic statement".
E.g.:
1. I should merely be making an ass of myself if I accused someone and then had to eat crow.

10. (炸弹)爆炸 - go off
E.g.:
Police say at least one car bomb gone off. (a news title from CNN)
Watch your language!
E.g.:
Hey! Watch your language!

Thank you. I dont even take a glance at it. There are tons of prahse collections on the Internet, but they are not 'yours', even you have already downloaded to your computer. I am sorry I havent made the purpose of this thread crystal clear. The key point is how to 'own' it, to 'master' it, to feel free to use it spontaneously. right? Practice is the only thing we can do to achieve the goal. ;)

Nice to meet you! I wish see you next time!▎我的精彩表达收集 (updated 15 Apr 04)
I hope to see you again 。 I wish to see you again 。 I wish I had the money “我如果有钱就好了。”。 I wish I were you 。 I wish you were there 。 。 I wish I knew 。

thanks,I know now! I wish to see you again!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
外语口语习惯上我会说 I got it now 我终於明白了。或 oh! I see 噢! I wish to see you again 说“I wish to see you again ”是你知道“希望再见到你”是己不大可能。 就算你用“ hope to see you again ”在这里听起来也是怪怪的。 老外朋友间习惯上会说“ catch you later / see you around / see you ”中文译为“回头见”。
A:I hope she noticed me (希望她有留意我)
B:You wish(别作梦了)。
B 觉得 A 完全没有希望,所以 B 用“wish”来形容 A 。

注:女会员免进!(read at your own risk )。
“We could be more irrelevant than we already are!”。
你猜那老外怎说?“Well,I gess he is not using it,might as well do something with it 。”

havn't checked it yet, but I think it is "AT".

At your own risk 是对的。字典上没有on your own risk的说法。

PS: Do it on your own risk!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think I have it figured out. this is how it works.
The preposition before "RISK" is always "At", the preposition after "RISK" varies as the situation arises. Here are some examples
If an employer hires someone without references, he is hiring the employee AT his(employer) own risk. We can say the employer is taking a risk ON the employee.
When someon is betting on a horse race . he is taking a risk ON this particular horse, he is betting AT his own risk.

1. leave it up to me交给我了;让我来搞定
If you tell other people with the phrase, leave it up to me, you show them that you will finish something successfully!
e.g. Leave it up to me, I said they are my friends, so I'll pay the bill.
2. burn a hole in one's pocket
you(money) is burning a hole in my pocket.
In Canada, when you see something at an ad that tell you things are just 20 percent, it doesn't mean that those things are 20 precent of the original price, but mean 20 percent off. Even so, when you go into the stores, money will be burning a hole in your pocket.

To emilyjia,Not sure it is a good idea to move one of my joke to a permanent spot up on top. I am bit embarrassed to put it down on the first place. And I don't think it is some expression one can reapply to form a new sentence. ( I am referring to the one about NOT USING IT). I want ppl to read , have a good laugh and forget about it. :)

就像说 newly built/reported/... :D

可能跟歌词有关“green acre is the place to be ”。

Kisses are things of darkness, but they lighten the night like stars.
Happiness is nothing more than a naive phase between two depressions.
Some live their lives, merely out of a lack of reasons to die.
I long for the time when, as a failure, I was still incomplete.
I was still incomplete.
I long for the time when, as a failure, I was still incomplete. I long for the time when I was still incomplete.
incomplete, not having everything that it should have; not finished or complete
When I havnt finished sth. I long for the time, (long for:want sth very much especially if it does not seem likely to happen soon), and normally, I failed.

我感觉 the time when I was still incomplete 说的大概是童年或者说长大/懂事以前的那段无忧无虑的时光。因为 when I was still incomplete, incomplete 的是 I 而不是某件事情。
12 May 04
I long for the time when, as a failure, I was still incomplete.as a failure,
12 May 04
He he, I agree that "as a failure" is a parenthesis. But in my opinion, failure is refferring to incomplete. That's why I couldn't understand it. I don't think there is anyone who is "complete".:p

This pin is not very tie-friendly 。

Emily,
